Warner Electric XS Brakes

Saves the weight of Business Jet motorized screen windows.

While private commercial aircraft are limousines of the sky, they are not immune to design restrictions common to all aircraft. Minimizing the size and weight of components is important to ensure the efficiency and performance of each aircraft. For this reason, the European engine manufacturer turned to customized Warner Electric X-Small (XS) brakes as it sought to reduce the size and weight of its motorized shades.

Whether it's a commercial aircraft or a fighter, weight reduction improves fuel efficiency and performance. Improving spatial efficiency further allows additional systems or functions to be incorporated into the aircraft design without unnecessarily penalizing comfort or functionality. Deck items, components, paint, wiring and even adhesives are scrutinized. The motorized window shading system, which is installed on multiple cab windows, minimizes weight or space requirements and offers combined benefits.

A European engine supplier supplying motorized window shades has sought to reduce the weight and size of its assemblies. Its customer, a leading manufacturer of commercial aircraft, launched a new aircraft with weight reduction as the main goal of the design. Brakes mounted on the window shade motor were identified as an area of optimization. However, it was clear that the standard braking solution did not provide the required weight and space savings. Subsequently, the motor supplier turned to Warner Electric to provide a specialized solution.

Warner Electric is an established manufacturer of light and compact braking solutions for aircraft interiors. The XS brake range is designed to provide reliable braking performance with minimal weight and space penalties. The range of six standard sizes is incredibly versatile, and Warner Electric can adapt and develop existing brake models to provide specialized solutions for aircraft seats or other motorized systems.

An audit was originally performed at Warner Electric's manufacturing plant to ensure that supply expectations from a single supplier in the aerospace industry were met. When the customer was satisfied, he commissioned Warner Electric to develop a new variant of the brake that would meet the specifics of the application. Warner Electric engineers provided samples, prototypes and pre-production examples of aviation standards - developed in close collaboration with the customer's technical team. This allowed a detailed assessment and optimal selection of brakes.

The end result was an electrically spring-loaded XSB22S holding brake designed to maintain the position of the window shade. The XSB22S, which is mounted on the rear of the engine, provided optimized torque levels in a light and compact package. Weighing less than 27 g, the brake brought the required savings required by both the motor supplier and the work current manufacturer. The holding torque (statically 0.015 Nm statically rated) was compared to an operating noise level below 55 dBA - which is important for maintaining a comfortable cabin environment.

All units are equipped with a customized adapter flange that allows the brake to be mounted on a customer-specific mounting. This easy installation allows seamless integration with the existing motor powering the motorized window curtain. To illustrate the performance of the newly developed brake, Warner Electric also provided the engine supplier with extensive electrical and environmental test data.

Warner Electric, an electromagnetic braking solutions specialist and a leading brand of Altra Industrial Motion Corp., is able to tailor its XS brake offering to meet the individual needs of specific aircraft designs. Global technical capabilities ensure that the aerospace sector has access to a wide range of support, from product design and testing to maintenance and technical advice.
